Festa Frawli is the much-anticipated annual Strawberry Fair held every April since the success of the first fair in 2007. Located in the picturesque pastoral village of Mgarr, the fair takes place in the large church square surrounded by lush green valleys.
The Mgarr strawberries are renowned across the island for their bright colour and juicy flavour. A constant supply of freshly picked strawberries is displayed and sold all day long, as are a wide variety of snacks, desserts and beverages all made with the flavourful fruits. In previous editions, professional chefs drew curious bystanders to their lively stands to sample their strawberry-based gourmet dishes like ravioli and non-alcoholic cocktails, prepared live in front of the audience in the open-air kitchen. Home made strawberry wines, jams and preserves will also be on sale, as will a range of souvenirs crafted by the local artisans themselves. Over 8 tonnes of fresh strawberries are sold every year, and another 800 kilos were used in strawberry-based food items.
Throughout the day, entertainment is usually provided by leading artists in folk and ethnic music as a celebration of the Maltese agricultural heritage. Special activities are also set up, such as the unveiling of the Malta’s largest record-breaking strawberry gateau. In the local primary school nearby, a team of animators will keep the little ones entertained with train rides, horse-riding manned by experienced personnel and countless games and activities planned for the day.
