The In Guardia Parade is an excellent opportunity to go back in time and learn about Malta’s vibrant history in a lively and original way. The Parade is a very popular re-enactment that attracts visitors all year round. The event is fun and not lengthy with a run-time of 45 minutes, meaning that it is perfect for the whole family.
The parade re-enacts an authentic historical event: the regular inspection of St. John’s Cavalier Fort in Birgu (Vittoriosa). The inspection would have been carried out by the Grand Bailiff of the Order of the Knights of St. John, the man in charge of military affairs at the time. During the re-enactment, around 55 soldiers and knights of the fort’s garrison dress in authentic costumes and show off a range of military drills from the era to demonstrate their state of readiness in the event of a military threat.
Those watching the show will also have the opportunity to explore a section of the fort before the performance. For this reason, it is recommended that you plan to arrive well before the start of the re-enactment, which usually begins at 11am.
